Like snuff-boxes and fans, travclling «necessaires» also concealed small
binoculars which had a markedly reduced capacity for enlargement and
were really more playthings than functional instruments. The sophisticated
toys of another time, «necessaites» were often the souvenir of a journey
or an unusual present for friends.
