The mechanism of binocular vision was described by Father Cherubino
d'Orléans in his book «La vision parfaite» in 1677.
After a few decades of complete silence, (in fact very few examples are
known of binocular spyglasses tracing back before the XIX century),
binoculars were «reinvented» in France by two opticians, Lumière and
Bautain, at the beginning of the XIX century.
Many other manufacturers made binoculars, not only in France but in all
of Europe, until the end of the XIX century, when the more comfortable
binocular took the place of the theater spyglass as well as in civil and
military uses.
